Description:
Many concrete specifications impose minimum cementitious contents that may be in excess of that required, leading to increased costs and increases in the carbon footprint of concrete used in those applications. This is an important handicap for a knowledgeable producer interested in optimizing concrete mixtures. Inability to optimize mixtures to meet performance criteria means that there is no incentive for the producer to become more knowledgeable and invest in improved quality control and innovative technology. The minimum cementitious requirement also does not help evolve towards performance based mixtures and in many situations may lead to poorer performance such as increased cracking. The primary focus of this project is to develop guidelines through laboratory testing on optimizing quantity of cementitious materials to achieve given strength, durability, and workability requirements in a concrete mixture. The project will also address the value of maintaining minimum cementitious content requirements in project specifications.
