Under California’s Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32), the state will have to reduce its overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. In ensuring that new projects are consistent with the intent of AB32, it has become common to prepare an estimation of the carbon footprint of new construction projects that are undergoing entitlement and are preparing environmental documents. To reduce the overall carbon footprint of new projects, we evaluate the benefits of using a Life Cycle Analyses (LCA) approach in evaluating various options for construction materials, such as cement, aggregate, and gypsum, where the benefits of locally sourced materials often outweigh those of a “green” product from a further distance, and almost always are more beneficial than those products imported from overseas. These evaluations can be used to increase consumer awareness of the positive impacts of local sourcing.
