Recent advances accomplished by NAVFAC Engineering Service Center (NFESC) successfully demonstrated the feasibility of using concrete mixtures with 300 lb/cu yd of portland cement with an equal amount of class F Fly ash for military construction projects. Two full-scale concrete mixtures were demonstrated that offer cost savings, enhanced performance, and a reduced carbon footprint. 5000-psi compressive strength was accomplished in 7 days in December with temperatures in the mid-40s. By way of comparison, typical marine concrete mixtures for the Navy often contain seven to nine sacks of portland cement and often contain very expensive chemical admixtures for enhanced corrosion protection. The cost of ready mix marine concrete delivered to the Naval Shipyard Bremerton, Washington Pier B construction site in 2010 was $230 per cubic yard. The alternate mixture would have cost less than $100 per cubic yard.
