Description:
Norwegian regulations for public procurement mean that it is mandatory to consider life cycle costs and environmental consequences of purchases in the planning process. This means that the Norwegian government's key advisors on construction and property affairs, building commissioners, property managers and property developers, among others, require Environmental Performance Declarations (EPDs) to be included in tenders for their projects. Concrete producers in Norway typically produce different products for which the concrete composition varies from project to project. However, there are usually a limited number of ingredients that are mixed in different proportions. Thus the Norwegian Ready Mixed Concrete and Precast Concrete Federations initiated development of tools for specific product groups that calculate EPDs for their members. These tools give producers the opportunity to disclose environmental information requested for tenders. In addition, the users gain a greater understanding of the environmental profiles of their products, which in turn creates a drive for sustainable innovation within the companies using the tools.
